The work was commissioned from the artist by the Westfälischer Kunstverein of Münster, directed at the time by Klaus Honnef, as the annual print edition ("Jahresgabe”) for 1973, destined for sale to support its activities.
The sheet of graph paper features a dense pattern of rectangles and squares of various sizes, in some cases with a triangle, a circle, or a rhombus in between.
Idem (III) is part of a group of works with the same title, based on the idea of a record of works. In the artist's own words: “The cycle of works entitled Idem is born as the hypothetical register of all of the works in existence, that have existed or that may exist: abstract and virtual, it allows me to proceed in time and in the history of art by listing without naming them the images that make it up”.1 “Idem does not identify which works, but, rather, indicates those works constituting a whole that in some way pre-exists any further analysis or identification".2
The print corresponds to several studies on paper (cf. GPC-0278, GPC-0279, GPC-0280), correlated to a large-scale work having the same title from the same period (GPO-0261).
