The black card folded in the middle bears the reproduction, on either end, of the two halves of a reproduction of the Barberini Faun. In the installed work, the card serves as a set design for the mysterious crumpled up image, located in the foreground in a central position.
The bisected Faun loses his original sexual connotation and becomes androgynous – as the title suggests – since the two distinct images evoke both sexes. The disassembled figure, as well as the crumpled up image, both keep out of view an integral image that we can only speculate about. In the words of the artist: “
Intervallo is the distance that separates the two 'moments' when the figure comes apart. But if we look closely, there are two intervals: the first one, which is visible, consists of the short distance that separates the two halves of the same statue [...]; the second one, whether virtual or imaginary, is the entire circumference of our planet [...] through which the two halves could be rejoined”.1
The theme titled
Intervallo was developed in 1984-86, in a group of sculptures made up of two halves of a plaster cast installed on two opposite walls (GPO-0525, GPO-0542, GPO-0549, GPO-0571), as well as in several studies on paper (GPC-0587, GPC-0723, GPC-0724).

1 G. Paolini in an unpublished passage of an interview with M. Belpoliti that took place in 1999, in reference to the group of works having the same title made from plaster casts (cf. GPO-0525). Typescript held in the artist’s archive.
