Colophonarte, Belluno

The print was produced by Edizioni Colophon, Belluno, on the occasion of the publication of the monographic issue of the magazine Colophon, dedicated to Paolini's activity as a graphic designer.

Colophon 55 (Belluno), March, 2021. 31 x 23 cm, 48 pages, paper binding. Texts by Egidio Fiorin, Marco Belpoliti, Valentina Russo, text by Giulio Paolini In pagina, b/w illustrations, poster 59.4 x 42 cm conceived by the artist enclosed. Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies, of which 120 include the print edition.

The photographic image set against a black background, torn into two parts that are misaligned, reproduces a left and a right hand that deal a deck of playing cards.1 Inserted close to the right hand are the photographic fragments of a sample of Pantone colours, while lower down and in the middle ground several torn sheets reproducing page layouts are scattered about.
In reference to the context of production of the print – an issue of the magazine
Colophon dedicated to Paolini's work as a graphic designer – the overall image evokes the creative process of graphic design in the terms of an enigmatic card trick.
The original collage on which the print is based is documented in the online Catalogue Raisonné of the works on paper at number GPC-1714.

1 The image harkens back to two works on paper made in 2002 (GPC-1005) and in 2010 (GPC-1220) respectively.
