Cahiers d’art, 1973
GPO-0248
Collage on photographic reproduction and on paper
Six parts 35 x 50 cm each, overall dimensions variable
Signed, titled, and dated on the verso of the sixth sheet: “Giulio Paolini / Cahiers d’art / 1973”
Private collection
The work can be installed in two parallel rows comprising three elements each, arranged not far apart, or, if the wall is large, in a single horizontal line.
In the sequence made up of six elements, the reproductions of a book that is progressively opened to different pages are almost completely hidden by a collage, which leaves exposed only a frame surrounding it. In the first element, a blank sheet overlaps the image of the book; in the second element, the blank sheet is partially covered by a reproduction of two pages of the same book, which are seen from the back; in the third one, the same two sheets are torn along the median vertical axis; in the fourth one, the torn blank sheet hiding the image of the book is half-hidden by a crumpled sheet; in the fifth, a torn fragment applied to the torn sheet repeats the shape of the crumpled sheet in the previous element; lastly, the final element imitates the configuration of the first one, but with a different image of the book which in this case is open to the last pages.
The work corresponds to a print edition with the same title made in 1974 (GPE-0014). The same theme and the same title were also re-elaborated in 1994 (cf. GPO-0742).
