GPO-0258

Anthology (15/11/1973)

Photo prints, pencil inscription on paper, plexiglas sheet

Six photo prints 18 x 24 cm each, sheet with inscription and plexiglas sheet 20 x 30 cm each, overall dimensions 5 x 45 x 30 cm

Signed, titled, and dated on a blank sheet: “Giulio Paolini / Antologia / (15/11/1973)”

Private collection, courtesy Giò Marconi, Milan

The photographs must not be placed directly on the support surface of the plinth, but rather slightly elevated by a piece of card stock or other stiff material.

Six photographs of previous works by the artist,1 collected in random order on a plinth, constitute a "personal anthology", authenticated by the signature and the date written in pencil on a blank sheet of paper held down on top of the photographs by a plexiglas sheet. The date corresponds to the opening day of Paolini’s first retrospective exhibition at the Studio Marconi in Milan.2
The title (sometimes followed by a variable date) was the first in a series of eleven works made between 1973 and 1974, each of which cites an anthology of one or more works (GPO-0258, GPO-0259, GPO-0260, GPO-0262, GPO-0263, from GPO-0267 to GPO-0270, GPO-0273, GPO-0274).

1 The photographs reproduce Senza titolo, 1961 (GPO-0008); Senza titolo, 1963 (GPO-0025); Zero, 1966 (GPO-0103), Decima musa, 1966 (GPO-0111); Una visita alla casa di Raffaello, 1968 (GPO-0180), and one edition from the series of the Disegni, 1964 (GPC-0017).
2 In the subsequent presentation of the work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1974, Paolini changed the date to the opening day of the new exhibition.
