Photo emulsion on canvas

50 x 50 cm

Signed, titled, and dated on the verso, lower stretcher bar, centre: “Giulio Paolini / Isfahan 1974”

Private collection, Turin

The photographic canvas reproduces a photomontage in which the vanishing point of the image – a view of the courtyard of the Friday Mosque in Isfahan – is hidden by a smaller copy of the same image.
By means of a
mise-en-abîme, the work foreshadows the central theme of the artist's production around the mid-1970s: the doubling or the duplication that leads the gaze to question not just itself but also the value of the image and of the representation as such.
