Echo

Photo prints applied to wooden panel

Nine parts 30 x 45.5 cm each, overall dimensions 30 x 413.5 cm

Signed, titled, and dated on the verso of the ninth element, right: “Giulio Paolini / Eco / 1976”

Banca Intesa Sanpaolo Collection

Acquired in 1988, inventory no. A.D-03987A-L/IS

In each of the nine views of exhibition rooms at times occupied by viewers, four smaller photographs, located in the area corresponding to the median horizontal axis, "echo" some of the details of those same images or of other rooms in the same museum.
When looking at the sequence of photomontages placed close together the row of small images framed by a white border resembles a series of paintings at the viewer's eye level; in some cases they even resemble paintings displayed in those same spaces.
The same theme was also developed in a smaller version from the same year, in which the photographic prints were framed rather than applied to the wooden panel (GPO-0341).

1 The reproductions are from the volume by M. Brawne, Il museo oggi. Architettura Restauro Ordinamento (Milan: Edizioni di Comunità, 1965).
