On a square canvas, a drawing of a series of squares in an oblique position arranged at random are echoed by two small canvases of which one viewed from the recto and the other from the verso. As they gradually grow smaller, they repeat the game of squares. The “voices” of this composition are "harmonized" by a small brass ornament, placed on the upper end of the canvas, portraying a putto with a swan.
The same theme was developed in two other variants in the same year (GPO-0427, GPO-0429).
