The drawing on the wall reproduces a door-frame that opens onto a room, on the back wall of which is a frame – similar in appearance to the door-frame of the virtual door – which contains a drawing of the same room. At the centre of the framed drawing, a small rectangular cut that allows the viewer to glimpse a portion of the wall constitutes the blind vanishing point of the series of paintings and rooms. In the foreground, a stretcher propped up against the wall, which overlaps the drawing on the wall by half, corresponds to the drawn rectangles to the left of the room.
The discrepancy, both material and conceptual, between the drawn space and the physical space on this side of that inaccessible “room” is emphasized in the title itself, especially by the hyphen that divides it into two parts: at the threshold to the “door” we are asked to measure the distance (and keep our distance) from that reserved dimension that exclusively belongs to the work and that indeed keeps us at a distance.
