Project for the Palazzo del Cinema at the Venice Lido
Unrealized project
In the Spring of 1990 the architects Carlo Aymonino and Gabriella Barbini invited Giulio Paolini to participate in their competition project for the remodelling of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido di Venezia, organized by the City of Venice. In 1991 the jury chose the project presented by Rafael Moneo which, for a variety of reasons, was never realized.
Paolini’s contribution offered two distinct hypotheses for a projection on the building façade. The first of these involved an intervention on the two large curved walls, located just after the threshold of the entrance colonnade. The red linear drawing created an intersection of two perspectival, life-size views of the colonnade itself. The second hypothesis, set outside, above the transparent entrance ceiling, included four empty intersecting stretchers each suspended from four steel cables. From the holding point of the sixteen overall cables, the same number of reflectors were turned towards the stretchers in the middle, symbolizing hypothetical film screens.
