Caduta libera (suicida felice), 2018-19

GPO-1073

Free Fall (Happy Suicide)

Pencil, red pencil and collage on paper in plexiglas cases

Fifteen plexiglas cases 70 x 100 cm each, overall dimensions 220 x 520 cm

Private collection

The ensemble of fifteen framed sheets in plexiglas cases, placed at short intervals so as to form a large painting, feature at the centre a perspectival drawing that recalls a stage, outlined in red pencil along the diagonals. An acrobat who is upside down, accompanied by several drawings that fall freely, appears to find his balancing point in the intersection between the diagonals. Two other similar male figures, wearing coat-tails and a top hat, viewed from behind and arranged at the bottom left and right corners of the composition, observe the scene as spectators.
The intersection between the red diagonals, which is a reference to the artist’s first work,
Disegno geometrico (1960, GPO-0001), broadly represents the virtual dimension – abstracted from reality – that characterizes the space of the representation, the stage of the painting capable of hosting prestigious performances and admirable stunts.
