Arranged in increasing order from the bottom to the top on the support surface of the plinth are: a sheet of grey paper, a lithograph featuring multicoloured brushstrokes (taken from a portfolio made by the artist in 1974), a photographic reproduction of a gilt frame, and an antique palette characterized by colour stains. The ensemble is topped by an hourglass filled with white sand, laid horizontally on the palette so that one of the two ovals coincides with the thumb hole.
The succession of images and objects alludes to a suspended time, extraneous to the evolution of chronological time: the palette is “outside of time” – as indicated by the title – with respect to today, yet it also belongs to a “timeless” dimension that distinguishes a painting (also recalled by the motionless hourglass).
The work is part of a series of three variants made between 2020 and 2021 (GPO-1092, GPO-1114, GPO-1120), which pay tribute to painting via an antique palette and several photographic elements related to the painting milieu.
