The hand associated with the torn sheet pulls back the "curtain" on an eighteenth-century Arcadian scene – illustrated in the colour reproduction at the centre of the oval canvas – which in turn is theatre of itself, to such extent that inside it duplicates its own image.
The work is part of a group of oval canvases – undocumented and whose whereabouts are unknown – that in the solo show in Spoleto in 1978 accompanied the main work made for that occasion (GPO-0389).
