Photo prints, glass sheets, fractured plaster cast

Nine photo prints and nine glass sheets 125 x 125 cm each, overall perimetral dimensions 375 x 375 cm

The Olnick Spanu Collection, New York

The plaster cast of the shaft of a grooved column is exploded on the assemblage of nine photographs placed close together and held down by the same number of glass sheets that are slightly staggered and overlapped. The images reproduce a drawing of Doric columns impressed over an etching representing Mount Athos turned into a colossal statue of Alexander the Great, based on the famous project of the ancient Greek architect Dinocrates of Rhodes. The central photograph reproduces the ten letters that make up the name of the architect, arranged in a circle corresponding to each of the ten columns.
The work harkens back to the theme of a
homonymous work made in 1982, which was later dismembered (cf. GPO-0479).
