Progetto per la decorazione della prima Cappella di Vence, 1994

GPO-0728

Project for the Decoration of the First Chapel in Vence

Unrealized project

Conceived as part of the project to decorate the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, in southern France, curated by Yvon Lambert in the spring of 1994, Paolini's contribution for the first Chapel consisted of a compact band of 1994 golden frames arranged in parallel orders along the walls. Isolated inside the continuous flow were fourteen frames identical to the others, whose number refers to the entire cycle of the Via Crucis. In this sense, the work is a record – a sort of frontispiece – of the whole exhibition project.
The theme harkens back to that of a project to decorate a church in Milan, conceived in 1989 as part of a tender in collaboration with the Turin architectural firm Derossi Associati (cf. GPO-0917).

1994-95 Vence, Château de Villeneuve, Pour les chapelles de Vence, 9 April - 12 June, touring to: Châlon-sur-Saône, Espaces des Arts, 9 September - 9 October 1994; Bordeaux, capc Musée d’art contemporain, 25 November 1994 - 19 January 1995, repr. (design detail), artist’s writing p. 33; on view at the exhibition was a prototype of a detail of the project.
