Tracce, 2000

The work was made by the artist on the occasion of the drawing course he taught as Visiting Professor at the Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst Salzburg in the summer of 2000.
"An empty frame, at the centre of a wall, is the original place of a series of rectangles that move away from each other and are dispersed in every direction. The rectangles, which are the same size as the frame and equal in number to the number of students who participated in the drawing course, are traced in pencil directly on the wall. The frame holds, inside, the fragments of a sheet of drawing paper: the sum of the different fragments is equal to the surface corresponding to each rectangle and therefore to the central frame itself. Furthermore, other fragments (recovered from the students’ work tables at the end of the course) appear here and there on the surface of the wall.
Hence, the installation records the ‘traces’ that thus remain without a title and that, except for the proof of its photographic reproduction, will not be recovered at the end of the exhibition period”.1
