Play Back, 1978

Applied to the centre of a primed canvas is a photograph, torn at the bottom, of a ruler set down on a blank sheet pinned to a black background. A real ruler, held on the canvas and tilted just like the one in the photograph, seems to question the dimension of the representation, the unbridgeable gap between the object and its image.
The same theme was formulated in a variant made in the same year (GPO-0398).
