Quadrante, 1975
GPO-0287
Quadrant
Unstretched and folded canvas applied to a stretcher, pencil on primed canvas
40 x 180 cm (three parts 40 x 60 cm each)
Signed, titled, and dated on the verso of the third canvas, lower stretcher bar, right: “Giulio Paolini / Quadrante 1975”
Private collection, Turin
Two unstretched canvases folded on their relative stretchers are placed alongside a primed canvas. On the canvas a pencil drawing repeats in a reduced version the image of these same elements, including them in a spatial frame that at the same time duplicates the outline of the stretchers.
In other words, the work serves as a "quadrant" for itself, orienting the viewer's gaze towards the perception of the work as such.
The same theme was formulated in three other variants made during the same year (GPO-0288, GPO-0289, GPO-0840).
