Pencil and collage on primed canvas

40 x 40 cm

Signed and dated on the verso, lower stretcher bar, right: "Giulio Paolini / 1975"

Private collection

At the centre of a primed canvas, a square drawn in pencil and a collage of torn corners from various sources allude to clues from a hypothetical painting. The two drawn corners are overlapped, at the top left, by the torn detail of a hand, taken from an antique engraving, and, at the bottom right, by the corner of a previous work (Un segreto, 1969, GPO-0192). The drawn square contains two corner fragments taken from an unstretched primed canvas, and from a black photographic canvas, overlapped at the centre, in the manner of a "seal", by the photographic detail of a hand holding a book (taken from a painted portrait). On the fragment of unstretched canvas a pencil line in turn evokes the framing of a painting.
