Fenêtre ouverte, 1994

GPO-0725

Photographic reproduction, wooden slats applied to blue plexiglas sheets

Eight framed parts 61.5 x 46.5 cm each, overall dimensions 125 x 192 cm

Private collection

The ensemble of framed elements placed at short intervals reproduces, in its four central components, the image of the window of Matisse's studio open onto the garden. The side elements instead prolong the outline of the open window via wooden strips applied to the verso of the plexiglas sheets and tilted so as to evoke in perspective the cross-piece of the two open shutters. The colour blue is intended to be a chromatic reference to the image of the window open onto the Mediterranean light.
The work was made by the artist for his home in Liguria, where it was installed so that the photograph of the Matissian window was overlapped by the reflections of the window opposite the painting and of the palm tree in the garden.
The same view of Matisse's studio was the subject of an earlier work with the same title, made in 1971 (GPO-0207).

Title from Henri Matisse, series of paintings on the theme of the Fenêtre ouverte.
