The photographic reproduction of Édouard Manet’s palette, placed over a wooden palette, is topped by a polyhedron made up of two cubes inserted one inside the other. Within this geometric model, a crystal ball with a slit in it holds an envelope and a card with several photographic fragments of Manet’s palette applied to them.
The anonymous wooden palette, found by the artist among his family’s possessions, and the photographic one of the much-revered Manet lie “outside of time” with respect to today, as do the card and the enveloped offered up to the future. ln the artist’s own words: “It is praise for Manet’s palette – placed atop a forgotten and neutral palette belonging to the family’s past – that I send to a future hypothetical addressee”.1
As indicated by the number in the title, the work is part of a series of three variants, made between 2020 and 2021 (GPO-1092, GPO-1114, GPO-1120), that pay tribute to painting by way of an antique palette and several photographic elements pertaining to the painting genre.
