The plaster cast of the Esquiline Venus, viewed from behind, is associated with a long drape cascading to the ground, as if to extend the presence of the cloth lying on the plinth next to the statue. Impressed on the fabric, against a night-time sky, is the image of the Earth, corresponding to which is an arrangement of the fragments of a plaster sphere.
The Absolute and the contingent, the Sublime and the earthly dimension we find ourselves in, Beauty and its ineffability: the distance that separates the opposites is the itinerary that the artist renews from scratch – ex novo, as the title tells us – in each of his works.
