Collection of the artist

The image on the wall reproduces a perspective view of three rooms, whose blind vanishing point recalls the very wall on which the image is displayed.1 On the plinth, a short distance from the wall, an antique globe holds down some folded blank sheets, from which torn details of abstract pictorial images emerge.
The dialogue between the two parts of the work, which complement each other, offsets the emptiness of the photographic perspective with the fullness of the globe, the circumscribed space of the architectural view with the boundless extension of the earth. In a figurative sense, the absence or nothingness that connotes the photographic image emphasises the symbolic Whole, represented by the globe, which the sheets on the plinth and the pictorial details attempt to hold.
The title of the work makes an implicit reference to the previous solo exhibition held in the same rooms of the Alfonso Artiaco gallery, in 2021, where the work In scena (Gilles) (GPO-1113) – in which the eighteenth-century actor, Gilles, was posing in front of a closed stage curtain – was exhibited in the last room.

1 The photograph reproduces the last three rooms of the Alfonso Artiaco gallery in Naples, where the work was first exhibited, in March 2024, at the end of the exhibition route, so as to replicate the rooms just visited.

2024 Naples, Alfonso Artiaco, Giulio Paolini. Dall’Italia, 2 March - 20 April.
