Suite No. 4

Lithographic print with collage on paper framed in plexiglas case, pencil on wall

Plexiglas case 96 x 96 cm, overall dimensions 96 x 775 cm

Dismantled work

The print edition entitled Suite n. 4 that is arranged inside a plexiglas case acts as a generating nucleus of the drawing developed on the wall, to the sides of the case. The drawing reproduces, in mutating combinations, the motifs of the square, the rhombus, and the diagonals that distinguish the print.
The lithograph consists of a folded sheet, so that in the open position, turned obliquely, the folds correspond to the diagonals of the perimetral square and the square of the squared paper applied to the centre. The latter offers the image of a black pencil, which marks the centre of a perspective drawing of squares and rhombuses, in turn inscribed inside a square, marked by dotted lines corresponding to the median axes (the whole implies the intersecting of spatial planes).
Through the variations on the theme of the square and the rhombus, combined in a potentially unlimited proliferation (as suggested by the open sides at the ends of the drawing on the wall), the work seems to pursue itself, inspired by its own title. Strictly speaking, the term “suite”, borrowed from the musical lexicon, alludes to the alternating rhythm of the various motifs, joined in a single piece; broadly speaking, it refers to the semantic field of the sequence and the succession, the taking over and the concatenation. The number 4 indicates the use of the same title for several previous works, beginning with
Suite n. 1, 1974 (GPO-0277), all of them connoted by a sort of reciprocal pursuit or reflection of the elements at play (cf. print edition Suite n. 2, 1975, GPE-0018; the work Suite n. 3, 1976, GPO-0332, also reproduced in a print edition from the same year, GPE-0022).
