A colour reproduction of the self-portrait of Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun entitled Madame Elisabeth de France (1782), crumpled up inside an empty stretcher, is accompanied by a primed canvas on which a rectangle filled with coloured pencil drawings duplicates the "vision" of that same painting.
The same theme was also formulated in a variant made during the same year (GPO-0291).
