The work can be installed on a black, white, or plexiglas plinth, or on a small table. The lamp cable must fall down along the plinth or the table.
A portrait frame with a black passepartout, set in front of an unlit halogen lamp, frames the colour reproduction of a waiter, pictured against the interior of a Grand Hotel which is brightened by the glittering crystal chandeliers. Applied to the glass of the portrait holder, corresponding to the area of the tray, as if it were the "offering" served by the waiter, is the torn image of a galactic nebula. The remaining part of the image from which the fragment was torn is visible on the glass of the lamp, as if to suggest the fatal "consumption" of the image should it be illuminated by the lit lamp.
The work is part of a series of variants made between 1988 and 1995, which are distinguished by the collage on the portrait frame and by the intervention associated with the lamp (GPO-0633, GPO-0644, GPO-0650, GPO-0760).
