Wind Rose
Dressmaker mannequin, primed canvases, stretcher, sheet of drawing paper
Four canvases and a stretcher 50 x 50 cm each, overall dimensions 170 x 120 x 130 cm
Massimo De Carlo, Milan
• 1992, Milan, Galleria Christian Stein: the work was a pendant to Un artista mancato (GPO-0693); it comprised two stretchers (the second one laid on the ground) and five canvases arranged on the ground around the mannequin (in the exhibition they recalled the ones associated with Contemplator enim, GPO-0694).
• 1999, Frechen-Bachem, Galerie Jule Kewenig: at the top the artist added a rolled up sheet; there was only one stretcher, and on the ground there were only four canvases.
A black tailors dummy arranged in an upside-down position is surrounded on the ground by four canvases so that they overlap slightly – two of them are turned so they are viewed from the front, two from the back – while inserted in the tripod are an empty stretcher and a sheet of paper rolled in the manner of a scroll.
The title metaphorically harkens back to the figure of the author in precarious balance, owing to the dizziness that will not allow him to get his bearings amidst the clues of a painting that are scattered all around.
The same theme was developed in a variant from the same year, with a collage of sheets of coloured paper along the canvases (GPO-0696).
